V. Program Highlights
1. Guided Tour of the Cultural Park
The tour will introduce the landscape and cultural heritage of the park, including the Kongkai (Traditional Worship House), Wanggau Liau (Lookout Tower), Dutch Well, and Cultural Relics Museum.
(1) Kongkai (Traditional Worship House)
The Kongkai is a place where the Plains Indigenous people worship Alidzu, their guardian deity, and functions much like a traditional temple among Han communities. The Beitouyang Siraya people have worshipped Alidzu as their guardian deity for generations.
Within the Beitouyang settlement, each extended family group traditionally had its own private worship house, known as a Sia Kongkai. On the morning of the 29th day of the third lunar month, the birthday of Alidzu, family members would gather at their respective worship houses and offer traditional items such as betel nuts and wine.
(2) Wanggau Liau (Lookout Tower)
Wanggau Liau was originally used by the Siraya people to observe and detect potential incursions by outsiders. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese military constructed a wooden lookout tower at this triangular survey point to monitor coastal areas and fishing ports such as Qingkunshen.
Local residents came to call the structure “Wanggau Liau,” meaning a place from which one could look into the distance from a high point. Today, the site is preserved for visitors and no longer serves its original lookout function.
(3) Dutch Well
The Dutch Well is located at the foot of Feishalun Hill. It is believed to have been dug by the Dutch to provide water for drinking and agricultural purposes. For more than 300 years, residents of the Beitouyang settlement relied on this well as an important source of drinking water.
During the Japanese colonial period, the well's water was used in the production of the famous “Apple Water” beverage. Water from the well was also used for making tofu and salt, and was even collected for Japanese inspectors and government officials.
(4) Feishalun Hill
Feishalun Hill stands approximately 18 meters above sea level and covers an area of more than ten jia (approximately several hectares). Located on the Jianan Plain, the hill is particularly prominent in the surrounding landscape.
It is also the site of a third-order triangulation point, offering an expansive view of the surrounding area.
2. Siraya Traditional Lifestyle Experience
Dart-Throwing Experience
Dart throwing is associated with traditional hunting and fishing practices, including hunting wild deer and catching fish. The Dutch collected deer hides in Taiwan partly because of the Plains Indigenous peoples' skill in using spears and darts.
Traditional Plains Indigenous spears were more than four feet long, with two sharp blades attached to the bamboo shaft. They could be used for both close-range throwing and long-distance targeting.
The Plains Indigenous people would sometimes gather together to practice throwing darts at fish in the water. Dart-throwing competitions were similar in some ways to Western spear-throwing contests, with greater throwing distance demonstrating the thrower's strength and skill.
3. Xiaolong Cultural Park
Xiaolong Cultural Park recreates the cultural memories of the former Jiatang Railway Station, bringing visitors back to the era when railway transportation and the sugar industry were closely intertwined.
The park preserves sections of the original sugar railway tracks and train carriages, allowing participants to experience and learn about the development and prosperity of Taiwan's sugar industry through an immersive cultural experience.
