Cast Net Fishing “Tafukor”
1. Introduction to River Culture and Fishing Skill
1-1 Changing of the Xiuguluan River : Dry season and Wet season
Participants will first be guided to understand the patterns of the Xiuguluan River. During the dry season, exposed rocks and shifting riverbeds reveal the river’s changing landscape. Before the wet season arrives, experienced hunters observe subtle environmental cues such as scent, wind direction, and water color to anticipate changes in water flow.
1-2 The Amis people's view on sustainable fishing
The Amis people have long followed the natural rhythm of the river, developing a sustainable fishing ethic of “taking only what is needed, in the right season.” Net size, for example, is culturally regulated—nets that are too small harm juvenile fish, while those too large reduce efficiency. Seasonal water levels also influence fish distribution and migration patterns.
2. Riverside Ecological Observation
2-1 Identifying Native Stream Fish
Participants will walk along the riverside, observing habitats ranging from rocky crevices to deep pools and river bends. Guided by local hunters, they will learn to identify native fish species such as Spinibarbus hollandi and Acrossocheilus paradoxus, gaining insight into how different species depend on specific water temperatures, flow speeds, and shelter conditions. This helps reveal how rivers sustain diverse ecosystems.
3. Tafukor Demonstration and Skill Learning
3-1 Casting Techniques and Reading Fish Movement
Hunters will demonstrate how to cast the net and how to locate fish—by reading ripples, listening to water sounds, and even sensing the riverbed through their feet. These skills are not easily replicated but are developed through embodied practice and experience. Safety awareness, including water flow assessment and terrain risks, will be emphasized throughout.
3-2 The Importance of “Feel”
After ecological observation, participants will learn the fundamentals of cast net use. From stance and hand positioning to the force and arc of the throw, every detail reflects years of accumulated experience and muscle memory.
4. Group Practice
4-1 Hands-on Tafukor Experience
Participants will practice casting in designated safe areas. This is not just a technical exercise, but an experience of connecting with water, body, and nature. Instructors will provide one-on-one guidance, helping adjust technique, direction, and balance. Some may succeed on their first try, while others need repeated attempts—but every effort is a step closer to understanding traditional knowledge.
